In the mid-1930s, many lookout towers were built around eastern Norway to reduce the number of forest fires. The history of the tower of Hornkjølen starts on the 9th of June 1941.
On a rocky outcrop some distance north of the tower, cairns were lit in ancient times, the place is still referred to as "Varden".
Next to the tower is an old cabin that was refurbished in 2019 and used for a rest cabin.
The tower and the surrounding area are operated and maintained by an association called "The friends of the Tower", which was founded in 2018.
