Description
Gruetunet Museum (est. 1942), Finnetunet (est. 1942), Austmarka Historielag (est. 1977) and Åsnes Finnskog Historielag (est. 1990). Together these four institutions formed Museum for Forest Finn Culture in Norway in 2005. Right from the start they have all four actively worked together to preserve and inform within their areas.
The Finnish immigrated to the vast woods around Kongsvingerregionen during the 1600’s and forward. Many of their building traditions did not yet exist in Norway then. The forest Finns saunas and houses for drying of grain – “rie” – have all been unique buildings in Norway for almost 400 years.
