During the 1800s there was a cultural resurgence in Kongsvinger. Erik Werenskiold grew up at Kongsvinger Fortress, where his father was commander. Thomasine Lie was a godparent in his baptism, and she contributed greatly to her husband Jonas Lie becoming one of Norway's most read authors of his time. Little sister Erika Lie became one of Europe's most sought-after pianists, inspired Rikard Nordraak who wrote the national anthem and had a close relationship with Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, who wrote tribute poems to her. One of Erika's many piano students was Dagny Juel, who grew up at Rolighed, the country's only Women's Museum.
